BAY TO BREAKERS KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND WITH IMPROVED RUNNER AND FAN EXPERIENCE

Under Armour MapMyRun Hayes Hill Challenge and Numerous Partner Activations Highlight New 2014 Enhancements

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 13, 2014) – The iconic Bay to Breakers foot race kicks off on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 8:00am and will feature more than 100,000 spectators cheering on some of the world’s top athletes, as well as 40,000 spirited runners, all vying for over $70,000 in total prize money.

In its 103rd year, Bay to Breakers will challenge racers across 7.46 historic miles from The Embarcadero to Ocean Beach to benefit the Bay Area community through the race’s new partnership with the leading local poverty-fighting organization Tipping Point Community.

“This Sunday’s 2014 Bay to Breakers showcases the great spirit that is San Francisco,” said San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. “At the same time, the City and race organizers have worked hard to make sure the race is safe, fun, sober and civil.”

Since its inception on January 1, 1912, Bay to Breakers has evolved into one of the largest and most iconic events in San Francisco, drawing a huge number of residents, visitors and revenue to the Bay Area annually. This year, thousands of runners are already committed to compete and others can do so online through Thursday, May 15 at www.baytobreakers.com or at the Bay to Breakers Expo at the San Francisco Concourse and Exhibition Center Friday, May 16 starting at 11:00am, through Saturday, May 17 at 5:00pm.

NEW OWNERSHIP:

In October 2013, Wasserman Media Group announced its ownership of Bay to Breakers. Since that time, the team has been committed to its goal of maintaining the traditions and the individual color of this beloved race, while also adding a community charity element and enhancing the experience for runners and fans alike.

WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR?

The 2014 race will introduce many new features to the historic event, each designed to ensure the race is as exciting and safe as possible for participants of all ages.

Start Time: The race will start at 8:00am this year. All runners should note specific start entry and corral times. In addition, families will have their own specific corral time this year, starting at 8:19am in Corral F.

Under Armour MapMyRun Hayes Hill Challenge: This year, race sponsors Under Armour and MapMyRun have teamed up to create the Under Armour MapMyRun Hayes Hill Challenge, awarding $2,500 to the fastest male and fastest female to get up the iconic Hayes Hill. The top three male and female times uploaded to MapMyRun within 24 hours of the race will also win $150.00 Under Armour gift cards.

Official Under Armour Runners’ T: As the official performance apparel and footwear provider of the race, Under Armour will be distributing a newly designed co-branded T-shirt to all race participants.

Finisher Medal: This year, Bay to Breakers reintroduces the finisher medal back into the event, which will be given to every racer that crosses the finish line on Sunday.

Finish Line Festival: After crossing the finish line, runners and spectators can celebrate at the Finish Line Festival featuring live music, sponsorship activations and giveaways and food and beverages. The Finish Line Festival is open to the public at the Ocean Beach Parking Lot and will close at 1:00pm following the race.

 

BAY TO BREAKERS GIVES BACK:

This year, the race has partnered with Tipping Point Community, the leading poverty-fighting organization in the Bay Area since 2005. Tipping Point Community invests in 45 local non-profits that fight poverty by providing access to housing, employment, education and healthcare.

INCREASED INVESTMENT IN RUNNER AND CITY SAFETY

Enhanced Security Presence: There will be a 20% increase in contracted security on site to ensure that all participants and spectators will be able to enjoy Bay to Breakers in a safe and controlled environment. Additional fences and barricades this year will also help to make the course more secure than ever before.

Greater Number of Portable Toilets: With nearly 25% more port-a-potties than ever before along the course, Bay to Breakers is more committed than ever to keeping the city clean on race day.

KEEP IT SAFE, KEEP IT FUN

Bay to Breakers is dedicated to creating an environment that is safe for everyone in attendance at the race and has issued the following security rules for race day:

No Alcohol: Absolutely no alcohol is allowed on the race course. Anyone found in possession of alcohol will have it removed and is subject to removal.

Bag Policy: Due to heightened security procedures, bags, backpacks and containers are banned from the race course, unless they are clear and are no larger than 8.5”x11”x4”. Participants are welcome to bring their own bags that meet these requirements. Approved bags will be available for purchase at the Bay to Breakers Expo.

No Wheeled Objects: This includes, but is not limited to floats, baby strollers/joggers and skateboards.

Bibs Required: Individuals found without an official race bib will be subject to removal from the course.

 

PRE-RACE EXPO

The two-day Bay to Breakers Expo starts on Friday, May 16 and invites the public to check out the latest in fitness technology, gear and nutrition and to register for the race if they have not already done so. Held at the San Francisco Concourse and Exhibition Center, the Expo is free-of-charge and runs from 11:00am-7:00pm on Friday and from 9:00am-5:00pm on Saturday.

Bay to Breakers’ sponsors will host activations at the Expo featuring interactive events and fan giveaways.

Race participants who did not receive their race packet by mail will be able to pick up their race packets and Under Armour Race T-shirt ahead of race day at the Expo. Runners that received their race packet by mail will be able to pick up their shirts at the Finish Line Festival on race day.
